Jewish leaders’ dismay over plan to build flats at site of Brest mass killing

The World Jewish Congress has expressed dismay at the construction of a block of flats in Brest, Belarus, on land where mass executions of Jews took place during the Second World War, and where almost 700 remains have been found.

Robert Singer, CEO of the Congress, said the project was “an affront to the memories of the Jewish residents of the city who were shot and murdered in cold blood at that very site.

The municipality had the very clear responsibility to examine carefully the land in question prior to issuing a building permit, particularly when it is known, by historians and eyewitnesses, that the Jewish population was subjected to mass executions there”.
